Hi all,
I am new to these Forums. I have recently purchased a manual EF XR6 and had to put a new drive belt on it because it was missing a whole rib. With the new one on it now squeals and I just noticed that the harmonic balancer is moving forwards and backwards which makes the belt sit out and rub on the tensioner housing. I tried tightening the bolt on the front of the balancer but it just keeps going. I am not very mechanically minded and am not sure what the problem is or how to fix it. Has anyone come across this and how did they fix it or does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks

the harmonic balancer needs to be replaced, the outer part of the balancer has come away from the centre, no way to fix it, it just needs replacing..

If the bolt is tight but the balancer still moves just mean a new balancer.
If the bolt just keeps turning, the thread in the front of the crank will need repairing. Chances are that is why the guy sold it. Will mean balancer off, radiator out, drill the thread and tap it over size OR have it recoiled and use an undamaged bolt. Oversize bolt means trying to find a bolt that will still fit, recoiling would need an extra long coil to be sure the repair is strong enough. But either way if it's not done straight is will ruin the crank. |

Try progress road wreckers for a another harmoic balancer very much cheaper than a new one or if you cant find one i have a few here but iam an hour out of Brisbane

when tightining the bolt ,do you meen its turning .
or the balancer itself .(air tools are handy for this job). i just replaced mine,(efxr6) ,the HB had moved about 5mm making the belt rub & was sqealing like crazy . i got a new 1 from autobarn,$99 .... make sure you know the month /year of your car ,as they are different balancers b4/after a curtain date. dave... |

the biggest ting ya wanna check before ye go any further is does the crank have to much end float? see it alot grab the ballancer and give it a good push back and forward see if its just the balancer or if the crank is moving to if you cant get movement by hand try a good sized pry-bar or screwdrver if you get movment that you can pick up on the thrust bearings are gone and when the crank will prob be rat s**t. if its the balancer you will be able to see the small rubber theat insulates the outer of the balancer to the inner will ave damage or the outside will be sitting forward compared to the inner if no end float, loose or damaged crank/ bolt will be your prob good luck

I have experienced this first hand with my EF's original going the same way. Ended up installing an AU. If its an Auto its easy to move the crank back and forth by hand if its worn, I would imagine if its just the balancer then it would be more difficult to move.

It is all fixed now. The outside part of the harmonic balancer came off by hand and the insode part had to be pulled off with a puller. That explains why the bolt kept turning as the inside part was turing while the outside part was still. The inside part of the balancer doesn't have any movement of end float and the bolt was tight. Put another harmonic balancer in, thanks to SV-Valiant, and it goes fine. Thanks to everyones input.
