I have installed an Intermittent Wiper Stalk for my EF GLi but it does not work.
All indicators, headlights, wipers, washers, key lamp, etc work. Unfortunately the intermittent function only wipes once every 5-7 seconds regardless of the ring setting. It is supposed to vary between 1 and 15 seconds Two wires were connected from the indicator/wiper plug, one wire (orange/yellow) to earth and one wire (brown/white) to BEM pin 10. I was under the impression that a low series BEM provided the intermittent function. Can someone clarify the wiring that is required for this to work. If the BEM doesn't provide for an intermittent wiper function, can the circuit board be modified ? How ? Cheers. |

that's coz the gli is a low series, while futura and xr share the same mid series bem!

Thanks snap0964 & 4.9EFFutura, quickly scanned the thread some time ago but all seem to just upgrade the BEM with no difinitive statements why.
To counter this, the mod doc "Information on Upgrading the Body Electronics Module / Smartlock for EF Falcons" as written by Xyphoid states the following: "Funnily enough, it appears that the Intermittent Wiper Stalk Input (The Variable resistor ring), is internally connected, and available within the Low series BEM (Though don’t take my word for it!)"... I took this to meant the Xyphoid briefly looked at the internals on the low series BEM circuit board and compared it with the mid series BEM circuit board and it looked like all needed bits were there for variable int wipers. Seems this is not the case So either the low series BEM wont work or i have cabled the wires from the stalk plug to the earth and BEM around the wrong way. Would getting the wires around the wrong way stop the intermittant function from working ? I suspect not but other views may be helpful. If the BEM wont work, can the circuit board be upgraded ? What components would be needed, does anyone know ? Guess i would like to save a few bucks and not buy another BEM Cheers. PS: Thanks to Xyphoid for his docs - rather helpfull |

Congrats to you for being proactive, and searching out the answers. {USERNAME} wrote: Guess i would like to save a few bucks and not buy another BEM A mid series one would be the easiest and best option I'd say - also you get a few more extra features.

Thanks for your comment snap0964 but easy is not the same as cheeper and in the spirit of modding, i guess i want to mod the BEM rather than just replace it
Anyway, the extra features a mid series BEM provides above that of the low series BEM is: 1. fading dome light, 2. variable intermittent wiper control, 3. windscreen washer control, 4. electric window control delay, Two of these features (3 & 4) require some extra wiring, and to me, the effort is not worth these extra feature. In any case, my GLi does not have electric windows . Variable intermittant wiper control is my main interest as i am not too fussed about fading dome lights (which should be able to be added to the low series BEM circuit board). So the question to the fordmod group is: "can the low series BEM circuit board be upgraded to include intermittant wiper control and what components would be needed, where ? Cheers. |

Why not just ugrade yourBEM? Its going to cost just as much and saves so much time.

Why not just upgrade the BEM ?
Well i have a some old circuit boards that i can pull components off and if its just discreat components (resistors, diodes, etc) missing off the board, then it costs me nothing to do except a little tinkering and time. I have read that low and mid series BEM use the same circuit board so it should in theory be rather simple - infamous last words I was hoping that someone had both low and mid series BEM's laying about and an interest to see what the diff may be and maybe post his findings. I guess its the same rational as modifying a mid series cluster to work in a GLI ! Cheers. |

Had a look (right to left, bottom to top) at my low series BEM today .
On the front (component side) of the low series BEM, the following components are missing on the board: R33, R99, D14, D8, T10, T23, D29, T3, R62, RL5, D12, D2, D3. On the rear (solder side) of the low series BEM, the following components are missing on the board: C4, C95, C18, C82*, C9, LINK35, C75*, C100, C94, C103, C15, LINK31, LINK7, C40, C23, C33, C37, C41, C38. Could it be that only C82 & C75 are required to get variable intermittant wipers working on a low series BEM. If anyone has a mid series BEM handly and would like to post what components (and there values) are missing, maybe we could all find out Cheers |
