well i had a search around, but there wasn't alot on this...
can the racks themdelves be adjusted or do i have to replace the whole thing? i took a look under my car and i moved the play in my steering wheel, the shaft moved with it but nothing leaving the rack moved... am i up for a replacement? are they hard to replace? also, it seems to be loosing PS fluid, tho i'm yet to see any on the ground ANYWHERE! where could it be going? |

The problem could be in the intermediate shaft. Either in the bush or the universal joint.
This part cannot be repaired. You will have to source the part from Ford or from a wrecker. I believe Ford still have the 6 cylinder one in stock, V8 ones are discontinued. I just had mine replaced yesterday but had a very hard time sourcing a new one, so I found one from a wrecked EL in good nick. |

Mine was leaking fluid out of the boots at the end of the rack, rack itself was screwed too, Just bit the bullet and got an exchange.
If its not leaking from the return lines but the rack itself, your best off getting another. not too hard to change, but make sure you get a wheel alignment afterwards.

there's a nut and lock nut on the rack that you can use to take some of the slack out if it isn't the uni's on the intermediate shaft. But usually this means the bush internally is worn and requires replacement, it's probably not that much to get it reco'd.
But probably cheaper to get a good nick second hand one.

cheers guys,
where is the uni joint? my brothers subaru had the same issue and we just fixed the uni-joint but it was in plain sight, i haven't had it up on stands yet... but have a good look at it in the next week, otherwise i'll replace the whole rack, is it hard to do?? |

Nah not that hard make sure you try to drain as much of the fluid as you can first can be mesy job if you dont. Still mesy but less mesy. Put up on jack stands take all lines off the rack first then drop the tie rod ends off. After that un bolt the mounting bolts. When unscrewing the tie rods off the old rack count the threads it comes off to. Remember the numbers on both sides of the old rack and put on new rack to that number of threads. Should be pritty close to alignment but should still get a wheel alignment.When new racks on fill back up with fresh fluid lock to lock afew times on the stands then go for your alignment.
