Hey everyone. I have a 96 ef II fairmont.
Today after i finished work i went to start my car and it was running very, very sick, when i accelerated a bit, it blew a bit of black smoke like it was running rich. So i turned it off and noticed that when i put the cars ignition to ON, the thermo fans were running at high speed for some reason, i re-started the car and it did the same thing again. After re-stating 3 times i turned it off and waited for a couple of mintues, then i turned the ignition to ON and noticed the fans were no-loger running at high speed. I started the car and it was running Perfect. So i started driving home and noticed that the car was running Awesome, like the best it has in a while. What could be the problem, i thought the thermo fans only run at high speed when the car is running hot???? Please help cheers Turbofairmont

Fans will run when the ECU is in limp home mode.

My ef just died and was doing the same thing.
Turned out there is coolant in one of they cylinders Have a look at the coolant level and if there is any milkyness to the oil/coolant, could be a head gasket or cracked head? also look for water coming out of the exhaust. I don't know if this is the problem but any input can be helpful.

Hey, definetely no coolant in the oil.
I just remembered that about 6 months ago my bro did a ecu diagnostics reading and he found that the maf sensor had a fault code, so he reset the maf sensor. Could the maf sensor cause limnp home mode.

This can happen if the MAP sensor (passenger side firewall) is disconnected - if thats not the case could well be head gasket

Thanks for that,
If anyone else has any suggestions what it could be, it would be much appreciated

i am having the same isue . cold starts it runs like s**t . no milkyness in the oil . n after about a week of driving it to n from work the coolant level has droped . turns out it is a head gasket . on the block just below exhaust manifold i have coolant stains . . imo this could also be your isue . check the block for coolant stains .
