I have an old nakamitchi 4 channel amp and 4 nakamitchi speakers running of an OEM head unit.

For many years i have put up with a hum when listening to my ipod via the HU or when listening to the radio. As a result, i connected the iPod directly to the amp and when running the iPod on batteries, there is no hum and no radio and when running the iPod via the cig socket, there is hum

The amp is in the boot with direct + & - connection to the battery using very good quality cables. The HU and cig. socket is standard car wiring.

What is the simplest and most cost effective way to fix this hum before i upgrade my HU to one capable of playing MP3 files recorded on DVD disk?

The OEM HU would be the most likely problem, you could try and run a earth wire between the HU and amp, ground a seperate wire to HU also.

rcas and power cable run next to each other

could be the alternator hum...
a thingo magidget ( noise supressor )
is place on the neg part of the alt

Yeh, got them cheep too.
Worked really well until the heat damaged the diaphrams on the rear speakers. Fixed by a nakamichi repair guy from very s/e melbourne and they were like new.
Years later, old age got to the frot cones but i went to a repair service which was close but the fix made them found too bright
Still sounds reasonably good though


Seems like a change of head unit is in order soon. Then will wire HU directly to battery +/- and see how that goes.
