Early AU's, ford made some with a full galvanised bodies (zincanneal) it is a very light coating of zinc galvanised to the steel by BHP (now Bluescope Steel) ford then press their panels out of it. We had a unpainted AU shell outside at work for over 12 months with no rust.
Now I believe Ford dropped Zincanneal outer panels but mantained it for the inner panels.

I'm not sure exactly the date it was introduced, I know it was done for a while, then dropped, mainly the because of the cost and the surface quality of the steel.
I do know it was during early AU just not exactly how early. I can tell you Ford, Holden, Mitsubishi and Toyota have at some stage used it on outer panels and most still do on inner panels where surface quality is not so much of an issue.

yeah well consider yourselves lucky, back in canada, during winter the roads are covered in salt to remove ice, so yeah the amount of rust you build on ure car is ridiculous, most cars don't last more than a few years. not to mention it acutally gets the body panels pretty damn bad, and its not like its a smart idea to wash off the salt in the middle of winter, unless your retarded

I have a couple of pin pricks of rust on my roof. Anyone else notice some on theirs, looks like a stain but it surely doesn't always end up being one?

its funny you should be saying about the zineallum (or whatever its called)

i work at GMH and the cars are e-coated after being welded together, they go through tanks and they are then primed, painted and so on, We have made a number of VE commodores (2006/7) and these are made with e-coat not needed, Using the Zinc based metal that fod used 7 years ago...

Something tells me they are a bit behind the 8 ball hehehe :D

On a side note..... would anyone be interested in a photo of a VE/WM.... complete new commodore..... i might be able to get a couple shots, but only of the raw shell....

Ive completely gone over my XR now, and rust treated it all. Not ONE bit of rust on the body work ne more!! :) except for the underbody, but i cant get underneath thier ne way lol

Its sweet, engine bay, door frames, boot, roof, spoiler etc all rust free. Looks like a new car, just need to revitalise the red strips and the black strips all around the doors/windows etc and the car will look in showroom condition just about :)

Story I heard was Ford tried to get the steel cheaper, and BHP refused, the deal went sour for a while, now I think they only buy it for inner panels where the surface quality is less critical, therefore cheaper.
