Lifting up a turbo say 5 inches with a spacer plate between the flange and the base of the turbo so it sticks out of the bonnet, would that give you more power or lag? Will it work the same way as a phenolic spacer or give the bad effect?

Well the obvious benefit would be heat dissipation and cooler air in to the turbo, there is plenty of guys making heaps of power with the turbo in the "traditional" position so no need to reinvent the wheel. But in saying that I would be interested to see the results if you did it.

I had actually been thinking about this myself once I go drags only with mine, but rather then a spacer as such just get the turbo manifold made higher, would mean less bends in the design aswell. Wasn't having a go or anything.

Yeah fair enough wasnt being snappy just meant it was a general question I was wondering about the dynamics of it. I do want to do something similar but I dont tell too many people my plans in case they fall through. Good thing too, because its proving harder than I anticipated. I thought I knew a good amount about the subject but even after google and wikipedia I still have no idea

For a start, phenolic material will break down at those sorts of temps. And I mean literally crumble. That's why its used on intake manifolds and not exhausts.

more lag... you only high mount a turbo ifs its too big to fit next to the strut tower and you need more space to run the 4" inlet, or you have a quality aftermarket manifold...
by putting a spacer there you are just increasing the length of run, slowing down exhaust gass, which will slow down spool up.. although it wont be a noticable loss, you wont gain anything. if your worried about heat transfer to the air passing through the turbo, a spacer is not going to help you. the turbo is going to run as hot as the exhaust gas that is passing through it

Believe it or not heat helps exhaust flow.. The HOTTER the better...
Let the exhaust expand in the turbine...
