I'm about to put on a new head (and replacing the head gasket) on my car in the next few days, and just wanted to know a few things before going through with it.
I've bought new head bolts and a gasket kit, and usually they say what torque settings to have the bolts at? However mine didn't come with this, and I've heard different settings, so I thought to ask here to make sure I've got the right settings. I'm putting on an ED XR6 Tickford Head onto an EB engine. So what should I have the torque settings at for the head bolts? I know the sequence just need to know this part. Also what other little things should I buy to apply the new head and gasket? I heard I needed some lubricant for the head bolts, what about gasket goo? Will I be needing any of that? Anything else I'll need to know? I've done some searching but I couldn't find all the answers I need, any help would be appreciated. |

The is technique involved in making it last....the job, that is.
The block and head need to be clean.....clean enough to eat off. I use ACL Hylomar on the headgasket, and Toyota black on the front timing cover seal. For the head bolts, use engine oil on the threads, and a little moly grease under the flange. Torque setting is 40Nm + 90*. Make sure you remove the timing chain tensioner. Get a workshop manual...read it.....understand it...... before starting. Don't use coolant/inhibitor for 2 weeks after the head is done...just plain water....then flush & fill with the appropiate amount of coolant/inhibitor. I clean and repaint the side of the block.....looks neater.....and easy to see if the gasket fails or welsh plugs fail. Thats not a new engine....just cleaned.

Does the timing chain tensioner require that special tool to use? I heard it's like an Allen key?
I'm almost certain to go buy the manual today just to be sure, and that Hylomar stuff for the head gasket. Should I be applying gasket goo to any of the other gaskets I'll be replacing? Thanks for the advice! Anything else? |

My tools for cyl head jobs. Not pictured are my tools for removing the cyl head alignment dowels, and rocker gear alignment dowels.
I also replace the cam bolt with a higher grade one ( from 8.8 to 10.9 ).....seen too many break from over tensioning by a previous idiot.
