I think so. The only hassle will be finding a 7 segment display that is yellow, and the right size.. or an LCD one. Perhaps hack up a speedo?

Switch/magnet alignment ??
I prefer the NF/NL cluster - have one in my XH.
Pity the gear position indication is only a repeat of the actual gearlever position.

Snap. I thought it would be great to have an LCD Display - perhaps 16 character.

Could show : Selected Gear (lever), and Current Gear (Gearbox), as well as Staged Gear (gearbox) if one had time to play. Would be cool to look at... perhaps.

Be good I suppose if you were running a BA shifter with Muzza's electronics (tiptronic) - ala Dellboy's setup on here from a few years ago.
Perhaps add manual override for converter lockup - I did play with this once upon a time, wasn't bad actually. There was a guy who implemented an even better version - threads are all still on here.

Im going to stay with the standard shifter for now, however my plan is to go with a leather boot similar to the later commodores, and have the gear position indicated on the dash instead.

The Actual gear stuff can be done by using a PIC to check the solenoid lines... and if you know what they are doing you can work out what gear your in, and whats being staged.

IIRC in the Ford shop manuals in the BTR section, the solenoid sequencing is all there - S1,S2, etc.
