Can anyone please shed some light on the Pioneer TS-SW841D 8" sub. I understand it is free air design and can replace the factory sub that pops when up loud, however car audio shops rate them as crap. I have a Pioneer TS-SW1041D 10" almost brand new from a ute sub box i have considered installing with a spacer to the underside of the parcel shelf to keep the "factory" style setup with a little more bass. The specs on this 10" however state it as an enclosed style, not free air? They seem identical though? Any help is appreciated and other suggestions toward a better setup without a large box in the boot. Im happy to upgrade the factory amp to suit the new sub also, so long as i retain the factory look. Prefer a new 8" and amp upgrade so long as the new sound quality is worth the price. Thanks

Put a 12" in the boot, it will sound 10x better than a free air sub in the parcel shelf.

Well there are kicker and JBL subs that will fit in there and do the job, but really its not going to compared to a real sub in the boot.
They also cost about the same too.

After trying 2 different 8" subs and wasting money, bit the bullet and got a competition 12" with 500wrms amp. Cant beat it, sorry but its true. Had to put the box in and ill admit it sounds f**k awesome.

Good to hear you found a solution.

Shame that free air subs are generally crap.

The real only way to run them is called 'infinite baffle' which essentially means it's got to have the back OUTSIDE the car. Most people of course don't do that, but a few do, and one of them is beating me in audio comps with it.

so did the replacements at least sound on par with the original, or even slightly better?

Really? that sounds interesting, would like to see that setup aye. So was this an SQ comp or SPL?

SQ.

You technically (according to the rules) can't compete with an IB setup in dBDrags (nor would you want to, they're not loud).
