Hi,
My XH ute will start occasionally eg: if I start the car, drive down to the shop and then after jump back in the car it won't start, motor doesn't turn over and no other noises etc. like it's completely dead . However all the instruments and lights work o.k. I would wait a few minutes after a few attempts to start it and it will start. Could it be the ECU/immobilizer? All this happened after I coded a new keypad but not sure if it has something to do with it or not. Cheers |

it could be the new key pad, if you can try the old one ad see what happens. It might also be your smart lock unit playing up, i have come across a similiar problem in a el sedan after replacing smart lock unit have not had the problem again.

most likely a smartlock problem as it is quite common
what happens if you hold the key in the start position and give the dash a hit at the top? |

hold the key in the start position and hit the dash above the radio. This happened to our old ute, it was a module playing up ( cant remember what one) cost $90 for auto electrician to fix.

My Xh did the same thing, turned out to be a fuel pump.

If it doesnt crank it'll more than likely be the smartlock playing up, as mentioned bash the dash to the right of the stereo.
XH XR6 - yours would have been turning over fine (just not firing), this ones not cranking. |

The BEM in an XH ute (which is an EF one anyway), is under the dash above the accelerator pedal, so hitting the dash may not work. You can try lightly kicking it with the toe of a shoe, etc.
Remove the lower dash panel to gain access to the fuse panel, remove the CRT LP fuse - if engine now motors over (won't start), then it's most likely a smartlock issue, probably a dry joint in the BEM.
