i know there is already had work threads, but dont think they cover what i want...

while the head(s) are off my car i want to clean up the ports a bit - mainly just port match them.

you can buy a DIY porting kit for around $50, so i figure why not.
has anyone else had a crack at this themself?

theres quite a few good sites that have some good tech documents, so im not flying blind - but im not exactly doing a hectic port job lol, i already have an XR6 head which after comparing the ports to a stock head, they have already gotten rid of the meat around the valve guide and few other little spots. so a port match from the tracing of a gasket and also the same on the manifold with a blend job to the rest of the port should give a slight increase.

WagonDad did a pretty good DIY port/polish job that i have been studying quite closely. Im in the middle of porting a spare 91aa head that i have which will go onto my EF in the future. Havent got much done to it yet cause it takes time getting the ports, bowls and chambers to match or be nearly the same in shape, size etc. on each cylinder. So far ive only just done a little bit of work on the chambers, smoothing the whole chamber and de-shrouding the area around the valves a bit, but not to much as i want to keep it fairly consistent and still maintain a nice high CR.

This is my cyl head, an EF 94AB head. I have port matched an ED intake to this head. Just needs one more light shave to remove some surface corosion near a water port, then assemble it.

Nice work on the 94ab head there cjh

What did you use to polish the chambers? They came up quite nice, im trying to get that finish on the 91aa head im doing to try and prevent the carbon build up a bit..

I've had several heads over the years, picked them up off people, get them overhauled, use them as exchange units when I do their head gaskets......makes the job a lot quicker,.... head off, clean the block, put rebuilt head on......done in a day.
I used a Dremel, with sanding disc's ( backed up with ice cream container lids punched to size ), then polish with a calico buff in a drill with polishing compound.

Hey misk _one, Got some pics of when I port matched my head, I dowelled the head to position the manifold and gasket the same each time, then picked the larger openings which were on the manifold to match the gasket to first, then painted the inside edge of the gasket with ceiling white paint to make sure I wasnt taking out any more material than needed when matching the head to the gasket, I did this process about three times going back and forth between the manifold and head each time removing less and less until the gasket matched both spot on, keep coating the edge of the gasket with paint each time you swap from head to manifold/manifold to head.

hi, polishing the chambersis a good idea , as some one said it helps in preventing carbon build up.

also its not a real good idea to polish the runners , just leave them in a sanded finish, as if you polish them it can " puddle " the fuel, and the sanded finish helps in breaking up the fuel.

Polish the exhaust runners but never the intake.

The head currently on my ED is an EA 3.9 head...fully polished and ported....chambers, intake runners & exhaust runners....still using a standard, untouched EA cam, still like standard compression ratio too ( didn't shave the crap out of the head ) and using an ACL Monotorque head gasket.
I'm currently getting 330km on 50 litres, all town driving ( 70km and less ), and I don't baby it either.
Results speak for themselves...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJTh9F3Vgg0
