From what I remember, ported boxes allow the sub to hit lower frequencies. However if not done properly it will sound ugly and not very clear and may harm the sub. It also takes up a lot of room since the volume of the ported box is usually bigger. The sub will also flex more and require more power to produce the same amount of loudness/punchiness (due to the cone flex).
Non-ported can give you louder bass. The box is also close to half the size of a ported and uses less power to do the same amount of loudness. Cone doesn't flex as much since pressure is contained in the box, which also gives you much better kick/punch type bass (think doof doof music). I am sure ported is good for RnB/Hip Hop low 808 type bass, where as non ported used for music with more quicker punchy bass such as Trance/Techno or even Rock/Metal type. Either way...a non ported enclosure is much easier to build and tune to than a ported box since the port hole/length/dimension need to be calculated well for good quality bass. I may be wrong so don't quote me on that...it may actually be the total opposite.

SPL use ported
SQ use sealed (non-ported)

IIRC from class lectures many years ago, a reflex ported speaker basically sends out your sound waves in both directions from the speaker itself. The sound wave emanating from the back of the speaker is 180° out of phase with the sound wave coming out the front of the speaker. That rear sound wave hits the back of the box enclosure which causes it to invert 180° so that it is now emanating forward through the port, in phase with the sound wave coming out of the front of the speaker, which basically reinforces the audio strength overall.
