So I'll need a monoblock that runs around 600rms to be fully powered?
How much are they compared to 4/2 |

i am quit aware of what clipping is m8
u will find clipping mainly occurs when say u have 100W speakers running on 50W and u crank the volume up i cant seriously seeing it happening running a 300W Sub on 280W but hey if your worried i did recommend a 300W monoblock

280W into a 300W sub would be fine... I agree with you there...
We are talking about 180W into each 300 sub... thats a fraction over half... Like you said... No doubt doubt the amp will be cranked, the headunit also, the low inputs will exceed the input capabilities of the amps inputs and the amp will respond with DC on the outputs... As I said when your talking hundreds of thousands worth of stage gear... Not one cabinent will be under powered... Distortion is better than clipping... Its indication to turn it down a bit that the cones are flexing way too much... Clipping you get about a fraction of second before its all over... Cheers, Tim

Clarion monoblock....... with both subs wired up the amp will output 880w rms
This will be plenty, and the amp is only $300....... win !! http://www.ryda.com.au/Clarion-DPX1851- ... px1851.htm |

Isn't that a bit to overpowering for the subs? They will only be 600rms all up?

That will be both subs wired in parallel receiving 440WRMS each... Remember once disrtion starts to back it off a bit and thats the max to run them at... If the inputs are cranked too high (set on the headunit) then it is possible to still clip amp... Turn the gain on the amp pretty 9 tenths of the way up and turn the inputs down to the desired level normally... Cheers Tim

Fordsrule174 wrote: krissdog i did try to tell him to get 300W RMS monoblock but judging by what he wants he is going to give it a thrashing so lowering his RMS below its max is prob a better thing but god knows i wouldnt put 360W RMS into those subs as that is like at or on the boarder of warranty void there is a reason they set that a warranty void limit in my experience with clarion they are single coils mostly duals seem to be rarer in the clarion subs so i wouldnt confuse the fella to much as they are most likely single coil They are single coil; thats been established. Although, I have a 750rms 15" Clarion that I feed 1000rms from an Alpine mono. I would happily connect those 300rms subs to a 500rms amp, each. As mentioned you use the gain settings to adjust the output of the amp BUT not like timmytimtim just said You turn the gain on the amp down, to minimum. Turn your speakers up to as loud as they can go without distorting, then you adjust the gain on the sub amp until you are happy with the sub bass. Personally I wouldnt go over 3/4 on the gain on any amp. The RCA signal will be clean for pretty much the entire volume level on the headunit providing you havent f**k around with EQ/'loud'/bass boost etc settings. Clipping occurs more so when the amp cannot amplify the signal because its exceeding the capabilities of the amp, which happens when you turn the gain up too far. Running a 300rms sub on 280rms does not guarantee it will not clip, at all. Its all in the tuning at the end of the day, but you do try to give yourself headroom in audio - extra power that may not necessarily be used but is there if needed. It means the amp doesnt work as hard as it can, reducing stress on components as it doesnt run as hot as a smaller amp trying to produce the same output. Think of it like a car trying to tow a trailer. You have a 2L 4 banger and a 5L V8. Sure the 2L will tow the trailer, but it will be working a hell of a lot harder than the 5L. And if you drive the 5L right, you can tow the trailer at exactly the same speeds and acceleration as the 2L, and it will barely notice the load. Its not rocket surgery FFS. |

So would it be best to find an amp around 500-700rms?

Is the gain on a car amp pre or post gain?
If its post gain I'd have it nearlly cranked fully (My assumption) If its pre gain I would do as Krisisdog just said... Take most stage amplifiers... The have no gain settings at all... The are power amps... The run flat out and the volume controlling is done pre gain on the desk... Hence there is no post gain setting... As I said I though the gain on the amps may be post gain and you'd just leave it flat out and adjust the pre gain on the head unit... But that assumption of post gain my be wrong too... Cheers, Tim

its just that you havnt really taken in the last few posts, and have still got the mindset you need to buy the exact same rated amp to the subs
in reality, your better off with a higher powered decent amp to begin with, and adjust the settings as you need good luck with whatever you go with........... i would recemmend a monoblock amp which will fire over 600w rms @ 2ohms |

Will do, just been browsing a few places, and everyone has many different ideas, some people say underpowering is better, overpowering won't hurt. Some people say to have nearly the same rms.
I was just asking, I just don't want to waste time and money. But yeah, will do as it's the general opinion. |
