don't just get coaxial speakers if your only going to upgrade them with better tweeters in a better position.

Not really a problem, you can either permanently disable the coaxial bit (they'll be a pair of wires heading up into it from the middle of the magnet structure - cut them), or use a proper passive or active crossover to filter it out.

Yes but that defeats the point.

Not at all. If you decide that the coaxial format isn't working for you, you can replace the tweeter part with an external one, gaining better staging, and high frequency response.

But why not go for the splits in the first place? Better bass response from most drivers considering it is now a whole driver and not one with a tweeter mounted in the middle of it. Plus the higher sound stage etc.

The best thing to do is to buy spacers so you can fit 6" speakers in there. 6" Splits up the front anyways.
What is your budget etc.

This, or to keep things easy, there's some good 5x7's made. Look at Hertz, and Boston Acoustics for example. You'll need to go to a real car audio shop, your strathfield, JB, autobahn, supercheap etc. will look at you funny if you ask them, they only carry regular crap.

I've got the Hertz HCX-570 running midbass duties (as part of a 4-way system) in my GT-P.

HCX-570
MD-500
HT-25
HT-20R

and a ML3000 sub.

The 570's are a full range, 2-way coaxial, and are pretty darn good by themselves, but I highly recommend getting a pair of the HT25 tweeters at least so you can better position the more directional sound (higher frequencies).

datamine, this is more like what I want to fit, want to stick with 5x7's.

I have premo sound also, did you leave the factory A-pillar tweeters running? Was this as simple as plug the new speakers into the factory loom?

Have you changed sub? stuck with 8"? I'd like to run good midbass as I think the factory tweeters cover the highs well enough, but want more mid without fking with the EQ, as it gives too much bottom end combined with highs.. the middle sounds empty.

Is there a thread with more audio detail here?

I'm not using anything of the factory system (not even the wiring).

The photos are out of date as they don't show the ribbon tweeters, nor my new sub.

While there's some good generic info here, if you want to get into high end SQ, I recommend visting mobileelectronics.com.au they're all about car audio.

yes and no. the covering was professionally done so it's colour matched (to the other pillars) texture matched (to the dash), and I don't have a vacuform machine.

Make up some rings to hold the speaker(s),

And fibreglass it to the A pillar.

These pics are my first go, I wasn't happy with the final positioning of the speakers.

i'm running JL ZR570 5x7 splits, i'm pretty happy with them.
i really like the tweeters, mids maybe not so much, personal taste the pioneer 160Rs i've swapped into my previous cars are a bit punchier (might be a 5x7" vs 6" thing?) which suits me better, but thats a personal taste thing.
also for the power they aren't that loud, but that might be a weird thing with my setup.

run down
RF 360.1 doing processing from the stock ICC
bridged JL 4500 for the JL ZR570s
Jaycar monoblock powering RF slimline 12".

if i was to get more serious i'd turf the 360.1 and run a proper source unit like data_mine.

i went for Alpine 5-1/4" Type R Splits (came with a 5x7 brackets) in the front and by themselves in the front are a bit disappointing, i wish i just got some 5 x 7" coaxial 2-way speakers... even running them of a 4 channel jaycar response amp with 100wrms each channel they lack any bass/mid. iv still got standard rear speakers and a 12" JVC sub, im going to try upgrading and amping the rear speakers but i think the front will still sound empty.

Cheers Cam
