Hey,

my gauge has stopped working, it flickered for a few weeks now it dose nothing...

I've tested the gauge plug and there's power right there...

Jst wondering how I go about testing the sender wire wether it is sending a signal or not.

It is a earth wire sender I think...of the black and red wire out the back of it one goes to ground, the other to the gauge.

How do I circuit the multimeter to make it show the reading from the sender?

Earth it and test the red wire (to the gauge) or
power it (on positive) and test the earth side?

Or is there another way it can be done?

I was wondering that, but would 12v kill it?

It only needs a small current to raise it.

what car??
in ea/ed there is only 1 wire going to the gauge sender...and is earth based using resistance to as a signal. not power.

in ef/el the gauge gets its signal from the ecu which gets its signal from the ecu coolant temp sensor..

Shoulda mentioned, it's a Calibre aftermarket one.

Different sender for the gauge, the wiring setup said to hook the red out of it to the gauge, and the black to earth.

The way I see it, if I touch earth on a multimeter, an positive to the red it'll show me what voltage is passing through the sender, if it dosnt read then the sender has blown, possibly the ondicator for that was the flickering needle...

Might have to find the voltage rating for the sender and try another one...

ok. in that case the sender is dead...
i previously had a calibre water temp gauge fitted and it started flickering then stoped,
so i swapped it with the oil temp gauge sender i had, also calibre and the gauge stated working again...
i never enquired about getting a replacement sender though....

Cool, it must be then.

I just tested it again with the engine heated up and couldn't get anything though it either way.

Now...to find another sender...
