Hey guys, I'm new to this whole forum thing but I just have a technical question to ask and see if anyone has any ideas.

I have a 96 XH Longreach Ute and It's been playing up a bit.. When I drive the car while its cool, it has normal acceleration but as soon as it hits a certain temperature (the M on the temperature gauge) the car has flat to no acceleration. Up a steady hill I'll have my foot flat and it will be revving but not increasing in speed. I have replaced: spark plugs / leads / filters / oils etc. ($700 service)

If anyone has any ideas, it would be appreciated.

hope u got more than the stuff listed done for those $$$

how many kms has the ute done?
may need a new oxygen sensor (replace every 100,000kms) in the exhaust and ait sensor (air intake sensor) and coolant sensors replaced
i think there is a thread here somewhere that tells u how to check them

could possibly be timing related, it will run warmer if the timing is retarded. that also gives slow acceleration

Thanks for the reply.

The ute has done 210,000km's and I don't believe it's had an oxygen sensor replaced. I bought the ute when it was at 190,000km's and it was serviced regularly by the company that previously had it but I don't think they've replaced it. I'll look into doing that. Do you by any chance know how much it would cost roughly?

ive never heard of an oxygen sensor causing any huge drama other than idle quality and a slight change in fuel economy, first place i would look is the ignition coil. find a replacement if you can they tend to breakdown under load at that age (i had dramas with mine at 215,000kms)
The worst thing about this problem is everything checks out and i spent a couple of hundred $$ replacing leads, plugs, filters, dizzy cap etc. my opinion would be to borrow one if you can or buy one i think i paid $65

I reckon I'd be checking the throttle cable. They're notorious for giving above the exhaust manifold. Sounds like it's fine until underbonnet temps get up there making the plastic soft.

Yeah the engine is revving really hard but the ute doesn't accelerate as much as it should be.

Is it a manual???...or automatic.......either way...it ain't good.
Have you had a look at the dizzy and the coil???

Sounds like the same issue I am having with my XH Ute.

Driving it the other day and went ot over-take, travelling along at about 50km/hr - Planted my foot to the floor and the car just rev's, doesn't seem to go much faster.

Weirdly, car has no issues reaching speed - just doesn't react well when I try and reach speed by planting my foot on the floor - only reacts properly when I gradually build up speed.

Only thing I haven't yet replaced is the Coil.

When I planted my foot the other day, it also seemed to miss-fire, Psst, Psst, Psst from the motor - anyone got any ideas about what is causing this???

Dizzy is lose, where it interconnects with the engine, that gear is worn.

Dizzy looks almost new, so it is the cogs at the bottom that engage it - not on the dizzy, but the engine side.

There is a good 2cm play in the rotor button.

Try moving the coil from its current mounting on the block(stupid idea!).You may be able to un-do the wiring harness to the coil,and the leads may be long enough to reach the new mounting position that's convenient for you.Just moved the coil on my XG from off the block(where it gets all the engine heat),un-did the wiring harness to the coil,and had enough wiring length to let me mount the coil using one of the shock absorber mounting bracket studs.Just had to buy a slightly longer coil to dizy lead,and the coil now runs much cooler.
