Hi guys,
Can anyne tell me if you need to remove bellhousing in order to instal manual trans into AU XR8? Its actually a T56 tremec. I have been told its virtually impossible to fit without taking it off. |

if it's an auto now it's gonna be different between auto and manual.

I probably need to extrapolate more.
A pub discussion was raised, as I was talking about the conversion from Auto to T56 manual in my AU XR8. Mates reckon you can easily (easily being the main word) instal without having to take of the bellhousing. Yes, i understand auto and manual have different bellhousings. I reckon it is easier to instal with the bellhousing removed from the trans, and actually think you can't do it all with it left on. I think there would be problems in aligning the clutch/trans with it on. It would be easier to fit with the bellhousing installed first to engine block, and then fit the trans afterwards. anyone had experience with this? |

both ways are do able, but imo its easier if the bellhousing is fitted first then the box...

Its far easier to Fit the bell housing to the block and then the trans to the bell housing.
No problems with aligning you'll need to allign the clutch first with a dummy shaft or clutch plate aligner. Problem is, not all boxes have a removable bell housings from the Outside like T5's W57's etc are all bolted on the inside of the bell housing making you install them together.

thanks.
this is a T56 though, where bellhousing can be removed. I've heard that the whole assy can't actually be installed, and the bellhousing needs to be installed first to aid in installation. Also, it is important to have the dowels in place (and DON'T remove them). |

It would be hard work to put it in with the bellhousing attached.
I have a 6 cyl one and there isnt much space to work with. Not sure if the V8's have a smaller bellhousing or not though. I took mine out yesterday, box first then bellhousing and clutch. You wont have alignment issues if you line up the clutch properly first then its just a matter of sliding the box into the bellhousing. |

G'day mate, have to align and bolt up the clutch, before you can fit either the gearbox, or bell housing, and once you've lined up the clutch and bolted it in, that's the only thing you really need to worry about aligning, personally both are doable, but in my opinion much easier to do box separate to bell housing. remember it has to be doable, how else would you put an auto in one.

thanks troyman. I think the auto bellhousing is smaller.
I also checked workshop manual for both AU and BF (has the T56) and both say to fit bellhousing first before trans. Also the Tremec manual states the same. So it seems that common practice is to fit bellhousing first, and in fact may be the only way to do it. |
