Hey guys i bought a BA V8 Fairmont yesterday, pretty impressed with the power and economy i get... around town on the way to work i can get it to 12l/100km if i drive sensibly...

Just wanted to ask some of your opinions... what should i be checking to ensure the car is running as best as it can be? It's done 147,000kms, and is 02 model. I've heard i should take a look at the O2 sensor, what else would be good to check?

Also interested in what mods can be done to improve performance/looks without compromising the 'luxury' appeal of the car (ie I don't want to add too loud an exhaust, crazy wings etc)

Be good to hear everyone's thoughts...

Cheers

has it had the recall on the cam phasers i think it is. i heard of the early V8's having the cam gears fall off the cams and lunching motors

Intake, exhaust, and a good tune should see some healthy results performance wise.

the cam phasers are not a recall, they are just something common that f**k up...

Cam Phasers and Tensioners are common issues.. aswell as spark plugs breaking.
seeing that yours is nearing 150,000 see if the plugs have been done or not.

if they havn't then be prepared for them to break, in which case a special tool is required to remove them.

Excellent guys, I'll look into the cam phasers and tensioners, looking to do a major service myself in the next month or so, so the plugs will be changed then.

Re the exhaust, I don't want it to sound like a ricebox, just got rid of a Eunos 30x that had a horrific exhaust note (especially on freeways etc), is it possible to get a nice sound only went I give it some boot, rather than all the time? I'd still like to keep the exhaust note fairly subdued as i get around town, but when i hammer it I'd like that nice v8 sound to rip out... any suggestions who I should talk to about what type of exhaust to look at?

Again thanks for the help, it's good to be able to speak with guys that know these cars inside out
