does anyone know if you can put an au xr6 head on a el xr6 or are you better off putting work in to the el xr6 head?

You can put an AU XR6 head on an EL block, however you have to run the same running gear. So AU rockers with AU camshaft...can't remember if you can run E-series rocker assembly and E-series camshaft. Either way, you can't mix AU rocker assembly with an E-series camshaft or vice versa.

The last of the EL's had the AU head they called it the "HYBRID MOTOR" with the AU head you had to us AU cam ect.
I have been told by the builders of the i6 motor at FORD Geelong the AU head was a better unit

As above, yes you can put an AU XR6 head onto your EL, but just stick with the current EL XR6 head you have. Performance-wise, there is no point in buying any other head and putting it on, just save the money and put it towards getting the EL head reco'd and ported etc..
