So I've heard some people saying that you should tighten up engine bay components as they age to reduce leaks and vibration/movement.
Im guessing they mean sump bolts, head bolts, rockercover nuts, intake exhaust manifold bolts. Am I n the right track? Is it safe to re tighten head bolts? Should I also do my rocker gear bolts and what Nm should the head bolts and rocker gear be tightend to. Anything else I should tighten. And do any of you guys/gals do this? Thanks. |

uhh...
I have never heard of periodic tightening of bolts besides BA/BF turbo engines where I have been told the turbo bolts or turbo manifold bolts work themselves loose. I haven't had any issues with bolts while owning my EL...or even the EA for that matter. Also head bolts are Torque To Yield (TTY) bolts which are once off use only and shouldn't require any retightening. Rocker gear? I'd be very worried if your rocker assembly retaining bolts work themselves loose. Intake manifold bolts may come loose...but I'd be worried about the fact that they weren't put on properly to begin with. Exhaust manifold...might need a retighten if it was just installed or a new gasket put in for better sealing...but usually you don't need to. I mean have a look around the bay to make sure nuts are supposed to be tight...but I don't think any bolts should come loose.

in an N/A E series there should be nothing that requires a retighten. especially the components you has mentioned. Thats what doing stuff up to specific nM's is all about in the first place.

That's what I was thinking.
But wanted some more oppinions. When my extractors were installed I was told to re tighten it after a few days. So I did. A couple went a quarter turn. Ill check my inlet manifold and leave the rest. Thanks. |

The only bolts that may need retorqueing are Intake manifold bolts, engine mount bracket to engine block bolts, engine sump bolts, some of the timing cover bolts, a/c tensioner bracket bolts, and the engine brace bracket bolts.
If the nuts come loose on the exhaust manifold slip joint, it will usually need a new gasket.....and the nuts that hold the primary exhaust pipe to the manifold, come loose from time to time...you know...the hot & cold cycles thingy.

As dc_todd said, if things are done up properly in the first place (and are specified properly by the engineers/designers), they don't need maintenance.

My DA had a small leak at the front of the rocker cover. It collected dust and it was too small to wary about it. I re tighten the bolts and no more leak. I just love a clean engine.
