could be the cat converter on the exhaust or a stuffed muffler .

I'd vote cat... Under load the motor rocks/vibrates more...
The ceramic comes losses and vibrates on the tin housing... eventually they go C**k-eyed and part block it... Best to fit a metallic cat... like I will one day...

Is yours auto transmission? The torque convertor bolts have a habit of coming lose. Fortunately, it's not a major to fix. Just put some Loctite on the threads before tightening them back up.
If the engine is rocking more than normal under load, you could have a failed left (passenger side) motor mount. Again, not a major to fix, but miserable to get at under the intake manifold - need to remove the airbox (3 bolts) to get access. Hope this helps.

If it is manual, it could be your thrust bearings. If the thrust bearing is stuffed, the input shaft of the gearbox just vibrates against it. Could also be crank end bearing or something...I've just gone blank...which is a more serious situation.

thrust bearing noise usually goes when you press the clutch in yeah?
if its the cat pull up... let the car cool and reach under the side and bang on the cat and see if it rattles... That will eliminate that... Cheers, Tim

Sweep the floor, refit the cat and enjoy.

It is illegal and in the cities they have detectors to spot cars without a cat... and because we're talking emissions control here... I bet its not really a cheap fine somehow...
Cheers, Tim

I had my AU at mechanics last yr .. having probs he had taken off the cat to do test and put back on ... but when he done this .. he must bent the bar holding it ... cause it made horrible rattle and vibrate through floor when idling at traffic lights ..took to another mechanic few bashes with hammer was all good ... leave ya car idling in neutral ..stick head under car see if knocking ..

The hanger near the cat with 2 studs and 2 10 or 12mm nuts is the usual culprit. Just needs a re tighten. Unless your cat is dying.
