I've seen these items for sale online and thought they would make a great addition to a car that sees regular street use and some dragstrip time as well - but are they ok for use in off-street drag/grudge match racing?
 Obviously I'm not interested in Chev headers but the idea of electrically-operated muffler bypass seems cool...!

I'm guessing on a street car any exhaust component that allows the user to manually bypass any mufflers/cats is illegal. Even if it was a rear muffler bypass it would still be illegal unless you could prove that it is still legally loud at the test rpm with the butterfly open. The FPV coyote uses a spring loaded passive system so once a certain mass flow rate is reached the rear muffler is bypassed automatically.
In an off street/grudge race situation they are fine as long as the max noise limit (usually 80dB at 30m) is not exceeded. |

X-Force now stock these mufflers, i think theyre called Varex. theyre remote controlled, with a press of a button they can be bypassed, blocked or be made to flow normally.
they come standard on E3 VE HSV's.

Yeah, these ones operate by means of a switch that you mount in the cabin somewhere I think. Can't help thinking you'd need a hell of a lot of horsepower to make it worthwhile...

i recently asked a mate about them, he runs his own exhaust shop.
he says they are fine for the first year or so then they start to not open fully and eventually fail. i was looking at getting an inline one to bolt between my muffler and tailpipe, have a 1.5" hole in the block off when its turned on or full open when its turned off. im sure vpw sell them. my exhaust is near on the db limit atm, although a new balance pipe has helped a bit |
