hi people i have a EL or NF fairlane 5.0L in my forby ive got everything done but im haveing problems with the ignition timeing.
When i ground the STI wire to start the IOER test to set the timeing the book says set it at 30 -32 degrees wich ive done and works fine but when i start the car in normal mode the time timeing works fine under 2500RPM but as soon as you go past that point the timeing drops to about 10 degrees and the thing is that gut less it bearly moves, and if you try rev it more it starts to almost call it a backfire out the exhaust. But if i put it back into IOER test mode it revs nice and no problems right to rev limmeter. ive tryied new dizzy modual, TPS sensor is working ect i dont know what to do next does any one have any ideas. thanks matt |

Are you 100% sure that its going into base timing mode because if its only check fault codes(which it does) then the timing will be out and all over the place.
Ive recently just had this problem in the last 6 months but found out that it was a slipping harmonic balancer(i kept re timing the car @ different boost settings). |

Ok straight from the ford repair manual.
Make up a wire with a spade connector at one end and an alligator clip at the other. prior to starting the engine , connect the spade terminal to the self test input plug and connect the alligator clip to ground. This grounds the self test input and will initiate the engine running self test procedure. Start the engine. The self test function will cause a temporary engine speed increase to 1300/1600rpm within seconds of start up. If this does not occur the self test has not been initiated. Once self test is initiated the ignition timing will revert to the base timing value. Hope that helps mate. |

Hello, this is my first post/question on this site
I have a 95 5.0l NF Ghia with this same prob and have been told too do the same procedure as described here but i am lost as too where the plugs/conection is too place the loop too do the timing I know theres a plug with many pins where the fusebox is but don't see any lables on the pins so i can connect the loop correctly, is there a pic of the connection? My engine starts drives but pings like hell if i set the timing too 30 deg's roughly doing it the way it says under the bonet so i have just been doing it the old way but the engine gets very hot and still pings. And can these harmonic balancers slip? Thank You. |

All the marks line up when #1 Cyl is tdc and the dissy points too #1 If the harmonic balancer slips would this show up by not lining up correctly?
Is this the plug too ground one off the pins too set timing in test mode there all unmarked pins if so which pin? Thank You. *EDIT* I have just recently found the useful info i need too set the timing on another Ford site with pinouts and descriptions. "not sure if informing of other forum sites is ok here". Thanks
