is it true the series II ED fairmont ghia ECU's were tickford enhanced or is this just a load of rubbish

I doubt they would be, reason being that the Tickford enhancement on Ghia's didn't come around until EF Series 2 - this is for the I6's, but I'd be sure that it'd be the same or similar for V8's.
