So as usuall, search has provided me with a dose of the s**t but no information... I have the old dip stick type 4 speed in my late 92 Fairmont. Will adjusting the bands take away flaring between 2nd and 3rd and reduce oil temp?? Can you actually adjust the bands in these mega beast trannies?

Mine is an older one. It still changes fine except the 2nd to 3rd flare but Ive noticed the temp coming up a bit and after eliminating all other sources as far as engine heat go, Im reasonably sure the trans is the issue. Might just yank it out and slot in my spare EL one.

Quick way to fix that is flip it upside down, yank off the pan and have a look see. Ive had a bit of a f@rt around with a trimatic years ago. Stripped it and got it back together ok. Come time to set the tension on the bands it says something like 30in in the book so silly me turns the nut 30 times...not thirty lbs/sq inch. Doh, f**k kept trying to drive off in park... Once that was sorted it was sweet.

yea i thought if i pulled this spare one down and put it back together with new parts the same way it was pulled apart, and if i follow a book on it ill be fine, and its much cheaper than buyin a reco one or puttin a second hand one in and have it play up 20xxx kms later

Just saw your thread. How much do those kits go for? Might look into doing on for myself if they are a goer.

So, back to original question, do the old 4 speeds have the ability for adjustment, and if so, will this take out flaring between 2nd and 3rd and reduce trans fluid temps?
