Get the biggest trans cooler that's available, the smaller ones doesn't cool the trans fluid enough since you'll be isolating the water cooling benefits of the radiator side but the only draw back of the radiator heat exchanger is it's to small to be of any good under load.
Having any trans cooler doesn't mean you're safe. it's the size that matters. remember bigger is better.

Hers a pic of the one I put in when I converted to a V8 I think it was off a VY commondore at the wreckers. I got it for $20 and seems to be doing a great job. Just remember, when you fit one you will need to add extra trans fluid to allow for the cooler and lines.

The only way to know if its cooling correctly is if u put a gauge on it.................
The radiator does a good job of cooling if its in good working order and i did read on another forum, this bloke put a temp gauge and found his radiator did a better job of cooling.

Yep, the whole idea of running an external trans cooler was suppose to supplement the radiator heat exchanger for performance, higher stall converter and towing. the only reason we tend to bypass the radiator is because of the pipping in the exchanger cracking. if ford addressed that issue already then an external cooler connected parallel to the radiator is a must for trans longevity. Here's a "cool" article to read up on. air con heat exchanger used as a trans cooler. http://autospeed.com.au/cms/title_Cooli ... ticle.html

efficiency is more the key to coolers... a small b&m cooler could match a radiator sized generic cooler. due to the arrangement of plates. going bigger also restricts your radiator & air con. some people also prefer to retain the heat exchanger for what it was meant for... thermostatic control of oil rather than cooling alone.. cold oil kills autos just as quick as hot oil.
so it's not just about the most efficient cooler... as mentioned before a gauge is the only way to tell what's efficient for your application.

Would it be more efficient to take the radiator out and get a new good one (not a ford one).

The radiator you're after is a PWR part number: pwr5100, pwr5100A or if it's a turbo then the part number is pwr2331.
as for the cold oil mentioned above, the trans oil won't get any colder then 65degrees Celsius once it returns back into the trans. best way to find out how Efficient a cooler is is mounting one temp sender to the exit and one to the return line at the transmission. having the temp sender mounted on the cooler doesn't really give a tell tale real world scenario on what's happening at the transmission end. best way to deal with that is not having a temp sender at all. it'll make you paranoid every time the trans fluid temp sky rocketed.

we always check the heat exchanger in the radiator is good then run an external in series or we use a temp sensor with fan'd types!

Spot on bud Get urself a new radiator as they should be replaced every 5 yrs or 100,000 kms (which ever comes first) and get a Heavy Duty type. Thats what i have done and i have worry free motoring and not think about head gasket blowing or radiator mixing oil and water as its so old and breaking down inside.
