ok now fuel prices are sky rocketing as you all know, so ive briefly looked over at the benefits of converting to E85.
from what ive gathered a $500 dollar part is installed between your injectors and ecu, to tell the car to spit in more fuel. and after about 1000 kms of new driving on E85 you need to replace your fuel filter, as the alcohol cleans the tank and that causes the filter to clog. correct me if im wrong but from what ive gathered E85 is like LPG in the sense you chew more fuel but its cheaper to fill up, however unlike LPG you gain power for E85 has anyone done this before or know any info about a conversion?

$500 part?
The octane is higher so there is benefits to tuning. You need rougly 30 percent more e85 compared to regular petrol for the same distance. Work out the maths. You could probably use a J3 chip, bigger injectors and a dyno tune instead of the new $500 part and get more power. Some people say its corrosive and will eat away at your rubber lines. Others dont. Im not sure what to beleive but it isnt common enough for me to worry about. |

http://www.flexfuelkits.com.au/ thats one example of what the offer, it alows you to switch between petrol and E85 or blend mixes in between. that corrosion of the rubber is due to the alcohol as you would guess, but since the phase in of E10 most cars have rubber components that are more resistant to alcohol.

here is a excel calculator i made for e85.
there are benefits to power & economy if tuned for a turbo or high comp motor application DEPENDING on the price of the e85! also depending on the relative price of PULP, with e85 at 99c per litre its feasible, at 1.17 per litre (what caltex was selling eflex for)it becomes a decision based purely on power benefits due to the high octane.

U might as well just get a J3 and get it tuned for E85 as to get the full benefit, it also need's more timing and fuel on E85 so u need bigger injectors and fuel pump to suit.

As some have already said. E85 isnt a matter of chucking some in and away you go.
The things I needed to change to run it were: * fuel pump (I have a Walbro 255) * Injectors (I have 36lb) * tune (I have SCT flash) and then I could only run a mixture of E85/Eflex and 98 PULP. 40% E85 to 60% 98 premium. I have 36lb injectors and they are maxed out with the Eflex blend but after a tune I gained quite a good power increase. That was the motivation for me to use that fuel. I didnt do it for economy reasons. I also still have a lower tune to run normal 98 PULP as well. I have yet to see what my fuel filter is like mind you. Will be doing that next service.

the saving is negligable, itll cost 30% less, but youll use 30% more
i wouldnt bother... even the power gains on an NA car will be marginal over 98ron...

I will be using it on my build to meet the emmissions requirement for engineering. E85 removes 20% of total hydrocarbons which is a huge benefit to me with my cam.

A J3 is a chip/interceptor that plugs into an EEC4 or 5. It is then programmed to adjust your fuel and ignition curves, among other things.
Seeing as you have a BA, an SCT flash tuner will suit your needs. Brett
