Hey guys, fitted underdrive Gilmor pulleys to my 4V 351C XE with charging problems since... Have rebuilt current 55amp and fitted new battery but night driving seems to drag life out of battery. Also running a 16" electric cooling fan and a big ampd sound system.. Wanting to replace current 55amp alternator with an aftermarket 100amp unit which has similar terminal arrangement.. Wanting to know what's involved with wiring side of job, ie wire gauge to use and where? or can 100 amp alternator be bolted in and connected using existing wiring ( I WISH:) any info/advice much appreciated & CHEERS...

i had the same sort of problems with my xr, i had 16" thermofan, electric fuel pump, electric waterpump, stereo, brighter headlights etc.
i went to my local auto electrician and bought an off the shelf ingrams alternator, its an 80A, and bolted straight in with no mods, cost $120 a few years ago. Bosch also make a 80A, 100A and a 120A alternator, all are a direct replacement, no mods required i would upgrade the main wire off the alternator to the battery to something capable of running 110A, the standard wiring can run up to 60A buy a metre of 4 gauge wire from jaycar's, and some crimp/solder on terminals to hook it to the alternator and other end to the battery, should do the job for up to 110amp alternator

Find a Mistubishi 120A alternator from a EF fairmont and you will be peachy also. Wrecker cost me $50 and I put new bushes through it - keeps the volts up in the system with everything on.

yeah i guess you could go the EF V8 mitsubishi alternator,
you would need to modify your wiring to suit and also swap the pulleys/spacers over |

sorry to hijack thread, I'll have a go at awnsering your question too though, but what amperage is EF/EL V8 alternator? I normally run a 60A off a ZL Fairlane on those old girls, normally fine, what sort of battery do u have?

The wiring of the Mitsu to fit the EB will put you back around $120 - well worth the money I say and you will have no issues with it. For that my electrician(Toowoomba)cleaned the alternator(windings were very dusty and dirty) and thoroughly checked it(as well as the new harness...).
I run a 660CCA Exide with a 3 year warranty and sight glass. Always in the green and I check weekly with the multimeter(both static and dynamic - always above 14.1v dynamic/no more than 14.3v and 12.75v static). Cost $195 at batteryworld at Phillip, ACT. Good luck... |

Hey Thanks for that XR Fairmont 67 and others for suggestions, already have the 100amp sitting spare under bench so will use with heavier cable as mentioned, sounds like easy fix - Cheers guys....

The guts of a Vn alternator (85 amp) drop right into a ford 65 amp housing. with the following mods.
The power terminal needs to be drilled out a little. You'll need to buy a 40mm outer bore, 17mm inner bore (by 12mm) bearing for the front too. The regulator will require a small mod to you loom, with the I wire going to the idiot light (2w max in the dash only) and the S wire to the posiitive terminal of the battery. The s wire tells the alternator to bring more grunt onto the system. And of course a thicker wire. 85 amp into the ford wire is not good. Cheers David |
