I got the low coolant light on the XR6 today. Looks like it is leaking around the housing because its all gooey green and run down the side of the engine.
The thermostat has that pissy little rubber seal that goes on the outside edge but obviously that isnt doing anything. Seems that the mating faces should have a gasket of some sort as well as that rubber seal. What do you guys use to seal the thermostat housing? |

AFAIK ford didn't intend to put a gasket in there, just the rubber ring seal that surrounds the thermostat.
Some after market thermostats have a paper gasket included. I don't and never have needed to use a paper gasket, however I do use a thin smear of selastic over the top of the rubber seal beacuse of the same problem you are experiencing.

Aha. Just on the rubber seal or some on the mating faces?

I usually smear a little on the rubber seal and the lower mating surface only.
You don't need much just a thin almost transparent film.

Cool. I'll have to do that soon. I'll get some proper sealing compound rather than using selastic.
Got some good s**t at work called Hylomar. Use it on gas turbine engines. Cheers Madmax. |

The rubber seal is all that is needed as long as it is new and the thermostat housing has NOT been corroded as is usually the case

In my experience with both halfs of the housing new and a new seal installed they still leak, maybe i've just been unlucky.

It actually says in the Ford manual to lather some Vaseline in the seal, on both sides, before install. I am not exactly sure why.
BUT, whenever I have forgotten or not bothered to do this, the seal has started leaking within a day or 2. When I do it, I get 12 to 18 months before I see any dribbles out of the housing again. At one stage I was told that if you take off the upper housing in any state other than stone cold, they have a tendancy to warp a little. This happened on one car I did. No matter what happened, the thing wouldnt seal, but a new upper housing has fixed the leak for the last 12 months at least. |

The best sealant i've ever used is Blue Maxx Silicone. I'm actually using it for my thermo housing now. Its been goin strong for 10 months and still looks like I just changed it.

About 3 months ago I cahnged my thermostat housing and gaket, but Im still leaking. I used a Super Cheap Auto gasket cover, the little balck round thing, and it fixed it. But now it seems its leaking from the hsoe running to the coolant bottle. Frst thing is, how ahrd is it to change this house and what else could be wrong?

housing is easy to change, but obviously you need to replace the coolant. Could also be the heater hose.....thats a bit harder.

If the hose is a little bit long you might get away with cutting about an inch of the end of it and reconnecting it.
