I have recently tighten my exhaust manifold bolts n found there is one bolt missing on the turbo to exhaust flange, could that b the reason why wen the turbo starts to spool I can hear a rattle or a chatter? I'm stumped

Yup, a mates F6 done this (the bolt just came loose and fell out) and it had a ticking noise. Put the missing bolt in.

Did you check the rest of the turbo bolts were tight?
If they are, its probably just the sound of exhaust gas escaping. At high speeds it can make a sound like a rattle. If they arent tight, then its probably the turbo literally rattling around on the manifold. Either way, new stud and bolt from Ford... $16. |

If it wasn't an xr6t with the usual dodgy exhaust manifold bolts then I'd be inclined to say it was pinging as that sounds like a metallic rattle too.

Does it go away when it's at full operating temp?
I have the same (what I think you mean) sound; and am confident it's oil not getting to the turbo. I warm my car up every morning, about the time it takes to finish a ciggy, but I avoid boosting hard until a few minutes into the drive. The stock turbo oil line filter is under the inlet manifold, in the side of the block; this line removes the need for that, and has a inline filter halfway along it. I reckon the stock filter is blocked (140k's). This is why I bought the speedflow oil line off ebay, and will hopefully have it fit in the next week or so (maybe even with valve springs). Will let you know if it fixes my problem. |

Problem fixed.
I have had the new line fitted since last Tuesday, and the the rattle was still there as the workshop left the mesh filter in the block. They took it out on Friday, and ever since then my turbo has only made the spooling sound it should... with no bearing rattle! The turbo is now getting a nice supply of oil at all times. Inspecting the factory filter did show much contaminents inside it. +1 for removal of stock turbo oil filter and fitting of braided oil line w/inline filter. This is a must. |
