For the record I had dodgy ebay LED taillights at the time, they wouldnt go in either way because the guide things were completely different. Hence why they were trimmed down and just pushed in

There's a slight difference actually, I have NO lights on the back except for the center brake light in the rear parcel shelf. Reverse lights also do not work. I don't have a globe in my left stop lamp as the globe socket has cracked and doesn't hold the globe in anymore. It's been cracked for a while though and all the other lights always worked, the car staying on with key out/all lights not working only happened 2 days or so ago. Could the cracked globe socket and lack of globe be causing this? |

Bad earths can cause all sorts of logically unrelated problems.
So yeah, fix up your tail lights and reverse lights, there is probably a problem there, how it related back to the engine continuing to run, could be related to how the brake light circuit works. i.e. it's switched earth, so always has 12V to it, the earth is what gets switch to run the lights or not. if there's a short along there, the 12v may be making it's way back to the ignition circuit, thus keeping the car running. or as said, it could be the headlight circuit doing it. Tracking these problems can be very difficult, because the source of the problem may appear completely unrelated. As for diagnosing, break out your multimeter and start probing stuff, looking for voltage where it shouldn't be when things are off/on. With everything off (at battery removed for good measure to ensure accurate results), get for continuity between the ignition circuit and the lights/switch etc that shouldn't be.

Hey jsut thought I'd mention that I fixed this.
It WAS the cracked brake light socket, the 2 terminals in the socket that the globe make contact with were bent out of shape and were touching eachother. I seperated them and the problem was gone. So if any one else has this problem that's where I'd be looking first. |
