hi everyone, i just bought my first car, a 97 el xr6 which has done 98000kms i couldnt be more happier. The only fault in the car is that the gearstick is a little loose i mean when i change the selection it wobbles from left to right. when its in the selection its ok. is their a way to tighten it up myself or do i have to take it to a mechanic and if so are they going to charge me an arm and a leg just to tighten a cable or screw. cheers

Did you bother to pop the boot cover up and see for yourself?

The thing around your gear stick made of rubber, or leather which covers up the gear stick..

hat changes a few of the answers some of the others were so quick to supply. You can undo the tbar from the shaft, the plastic base will pop out allowing you access to the upper of the shifter mechanism, you may see something loose straightaway, of you may need to dig deeper, they were a relatively simple design, and a wobbly shifter is pretty easy to fix, someone who knows their way round an auto box will be able to pin point what needs tightening though, I've played with manuals too long and forgotten what the auto setup looks like.

Most likely flogged out shifter bushes.
Pretty much every E series we have had thats seen an auto transmission shop has got new selector bushes fitted while its up in the air.
