Hi all.
I have 1995 NFII Fairlane, dual fuel. It pings when you put your foot down. I took it into RACQ (as my mechanic has not been able to sort it out) & was told to check/replace knock sensor. Took it to my mechanic who phoned Ford to be advised that these V8s don't have a knock sensor. He adjusted the timing but it's still pinging. he doesn't have any suggestions. Anybody able to help? Maybe advise mechanic who could assist. I live in Albany Creek (Brisbane Northside). Any advice greatly appreciated. |

Service fuel system..
Double check timing and EGR ..Harmonic balancer may have slipped ?? Check catalytic converter condition ?? Replace o2 sensors if they are over 100,000 klrs old.. Could run some water injection to clean combustion chambers... Check heat range of spark plugs.. Maybe colder set required..

Accurately measure AFR when it pings to determin if it's fuel or spark related and go from there.

Air Fuel Ratio
Pinging can be caused by too much spark advance or not enough fuel. You need to ID which one is causing your problem. If AFR > 14 with your foot hard down, it is too lean and this is most likely causing detonation. If AFR < 13.5 with your foot hard down, AFR is OK and timing advance is most likely the cause. In between is a lottery or a bit of both. If you're lean then start with the fuel system and MAF - it may be under delivering fuel, or under measuring air (common with the bastard AU MAF housing & E-series sensor combo on a stock ecu) If you're timing is too advanced then start with base timing and balancer outer-ring checks

Get in on a dyno with an oxy sensor up the tailpipe and go from there, rather than replacing stuff and hoping to fix it.
Listen to xafalcon, good advice. |

Throttle body cleaner on the MAF sensor wires, use a cotton bud gently on the sensors. That fixed it up for me a fair while ago.
