A mate has been having trouble with blown head gaskets on his EL XR6 getting around 5000ks before it blows, any idears on why and how to stop it, seems the live span gets shorter.

Has he had the head machined...if not it may be slightly warped and causing the problems.

Use genuine AU head gasket, change head bolts for new genuine ones Have head inspected & machined to insure it is perfectly flat.

Even if he was using an EL instead of an AU head gasket, still isn't a reason why its only doing 5000 ks. I'm leaning more towards the head being warped.

True, however I was hoping to give him as much info as i can so when they replace the gasket again they have the best chance of it not occuring again.
I also mentioned machining the head.

Yes I recently read that on ACL's web site that ethylene glycol coolants can affect how the gasket bonds to the head & block surfaces.
Apparently the engine should be warmed up and driven briefly with straight demin water first then the coolant added after.

I don't use ethylene glycol coolants!

Is he tighening head bolts enough? It seems like your going to break something...Use a power bar with 2" x 1 mtr pipe to get the 90*....

i blew my head gasket last week and i had to get new head bolts, i had to machine the head cause if i put it straight back on i would develop more problems than i already had and i was told to run the enging with no coolant, nothing at all for about 30 secs to a minute so the head gasket moulds to the head and the manifold. Cause if you put coolant of water in straight away it will creep throught the head gasket and break the seal between the gasket and the manifold.

Has your mate been cleaning the deck with a wire attachement with a drill?
if so, this can rounden the galleries for water / oil and cause some problems with the mating surface with the gasket.

Always use a large scrapper or blade carefully and use 'gasket stripper' to help if required!

I hope this deters others from the 'faster' drilling technique!

cheers
