Recently broke a valve spring on my AU III XR8 220 kw (100k on the clock). The heads are off and luckily there is no damage.
Is it true these springs are prone to failure? Is there a replacement i should investigate whilst the heads are off? Cheers John |

Engine information?
What were you running that caused you to break a valve spring? I dont think that is a "normal" issue by any means. Something has caused it to give out.

It's a common issue on cars with GT40P heads.

car is completely standard and trouble free - no noises, knock, rattles or anything to suggest here is a more serious issue. I ahve heard its a GT40P issue but was wondering if a) thats correct and b) is there a fix?

Could it be something to do with the rocker gear?
May just be an old spring going brittle and throwing in the towel. Might want to check the rest of them while your there to make sure that they arent on their way out either...

Have heard a few folk say its a common GT-40P problem. This being the case just wondering if there is an aftermarket solution or do I just get the spings replaced every 50,000 k's? |

This is a common problem, but was mainly limited to the 200kW AU2's. When they changed the cam profile for the AU3 XR8's they also changed the springs to a Crow item, and the failure rate was supposedly eliminated. The spring to retainer fit was still very poor as you will have noticed.
When I overhaul these engines I throw away the crap retainers, locks & springs and replace with my own combination of crane retainers (99936's from memory) and a comp single spring with damper that gives about 130lbs seat pressure and 350+ open. This is reliable past 6000rpm.
