You can get a ACL Race series rebuild kit for the ELs for about 900...obviously you will need to fiddle with stuff, check clearances etc, but that's part of the experience.
In saying that, I think it isn't badly priced. I got quoted $2000 to get my spare engine rebuilt with stock stuff...obviously you would need your own motor so yeah...not badly priced. This was about 2 years back though.

Yeah it's not a bad price, however how competent the person who put it together is another question. I personally would spend $1500 and do it myself...at least I know (well I hope) I've done it right. Getting the head checked, decked, cleaned and pressure tested shouldn't cost you more than $300. Can reco the head yourself...not that hard.

my mate has an engine building shop. so all the head servicing costs 80 and machining, cleaning, balancing and boring costs me about 200 then add new pistons bearings and new chain etc etc it will cost me worst case scenario 1200.

But all that aside i think 1900 is good as some people still pay 2k for getting there head gasket done lol
