mmm don't know i never checked the other car but the battery in question also starts a i6 au i have here anyways i brought a new battery today and it starts first hit of the key every time no hesitation at all.

wildeb i give you the points mate but it really didn't seem like a battery issue.

my diagnosis: sad battery, tired power and earth leads plus a worn starter is enough to warrant a battery that's in better than average condition

thats the problem with being a mechanic. it's not always as simple as people reckon. gotta have your wits about you.

E.G. VE Commodore comes in. Customer has been told by another mechanic that his scan tool showed that the O2 sensors (all 4) were faulty. so the customer buys 4 aftermarket O2 censors (like 600 worth) and tells us to fit them. so we do. problem is still there.

we investigate. turns out the Airflow metre is screwed. making the engine run lean. put our test unit on. all good. so $400 and something dollars for a AFM.

people think that us mechanics these days just plug in a scan tool. and fit a part. not always that easy

So you try to make a recommendation not knowing the full story.

Thing is, the fault isn't confirmed - he hasn't checked what the voltage is whilst the 'suspect' battery is cranking the other car - going on what he says it cranks fine.
There could still be a starter issue - I've had a starter with worn bushes, would start fine some times, then not others.
Then again, I've had a good battery with a cracked internal connection - would work sometimes, then not others.
Then there's poor connections, etc.
Good thing here is he has another similar car to swap/check things with, so this should be used to the best advantage.

a good machanic is few and far between theses days, just recently i ran into ol mate at a party we where talking cars and he was telling me about the greif he had had with a el falcon apprently he had it in a mechanics for 3 weeks and thay couldnt figure out the problem so thay sent it off to a ford dealer and thay found the cog on the dissy was shagged so thay got it up and running but he only had 3/4 of the usual grunt, he took it back and thay told him all is spot on, ford told him it could be a lpg issue so he took it to a lpg specialist again he was then told everthing was at its best, so he was ment to swollow the fact that he had lost 1/4 power, i told him to drop it over and i would have a look over it, the timing was out i could hear it clearly so i gave the dissy a 5 deg tweek locked it down and bango it was back the way it was before, no one thought to check if the balancer had slipped putting the timing mark out, i told him to drop over one day and we would have a few cans and put a degree wheel on it and find where the mark should be.

i am not a mechanic but what happend to timing by ear when all else fails?

EFI happened. computers like things fairly spot on

yer still adjusting base timing in diagnosic mode does the same job as adjusting base timing on a xd by disconnecting the vaccume advance, efi or not i like to time by ear as well as light because if it dont sound right you can bet its gunner be out, over the years i have found not everything works best as it says in manuals ect, its not uncommon two have identical cars and one will run s**t better at 9deg btdc and the other will run like s**t and wants to be at 11deg btdc wether its edis, points or whatever.
