Hi guys my fg just recentaly ticked over 105000k and a day after that 3rd has vanished every time the car trys to engage 3rd it just free revs.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? and if so what was the reason for it? I've been told by a mechanic that he sees problems with this kind of box all the time but mostly when it's in explorers and he quoted me anywhere between $300 and $4000 depending on what's wrong. |

A mate of mine told me the 5 sp autos are a French piece of crap, and are nothing but probs. The ZF 6 sp however is a way better box.

first ive heard of them 5spd autos fukin up.

In the gearboxs defence i do drive pretty hard. It also won't select 3rd now so i've got the first 4 speed fg falcon

hm sounds odd. i mean i give my gearbox a hard time and nothins letgo yet. im waitin for it tho. lol.

Ok well i found out what happened the band on 2nd broke and from what the mechanic said the gearbox wasn't serviced last time it was supposed to be. Last time I take a car to the dealer for a service.

I HAVE A 2008 XR6 FG AND AT 22,000KM THE FRONT SEAL IN THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND PUMP BLEW.CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND THEY REPLACED THE WHOLE BOX.SPEAKING TO THE MECHANIC HE SAID THAT THE 5 SPEED AUTO WAS FROM THE EXPLORER AND THEY NO LONGER USE THEM BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM.6 SPEED IS STANDARD NOW.AND NO I DONT DRIVE THE CAR HARD AT ALL.

Last time I take a car to the dealer for a service. I think you'll find these problems are why people nicknamed the US Explorer the Exploder. The use the same autos and have lots of reported problem of thing breaking quicky. Also have been reading alot on AFF about people having similar issues to you now that these cars are getting a few km on them... And I've experienced the same in all FG rentals I've had the mispleasure of driving over the past 3 years when travelling for work. As for servicing, Ford quote these boxes (as with all their autos) as being sealed for life and never requiring a service... Unless you are a taxi or towing regularly. So you'll find there is no service schedule for the manual for the auto. Don't blame the dealer, blame Ford for its s**t selection of auto trans. P.S. I'd hit up Ford CRC for some warranty assistance. They sometimes do assist owners when something breaks and the car is just out of warranty. Wont get the full repair cost covered, but they might cover half or so. Better than nothing. |

Also had a friend driving a low K's FG and the front gearbox seal just spat.
