I've removed the fuel tank from my EF wagon, and drained it, it's rusty inside... So how do I clean it? I've been told to put metho in there and shake it around to get any water out (apparently metho atracts water, and methos flamable, so if any is left in, it's not the end of the world).
So any ideas on cleaning the rust etc. from inside it? |

Deisel then shake like buggery.
It probably isn't really rust, rust. It is more a bit of a fungus with some rust particles attached. If you wipe at it it comes clean and is kind of slimey. So heaps of deisel and like I said shake like buggery. cheers Scott

i dont know wether it works with car tanks,
but a neighbour had a moterbike tank that was all rusted out. he half filled it with small clean rocks and water (or metho or somthing) and swirled it around. the rocks remove the rust..... |

definately woudln't wanna put water ina fuel tank;.
i'm going around tomorrow to see how much professional cleaning will be as the rust is not so good...

Trying to get rid of it. The EF is 12 years old, and it's not the original tank, so it's not even that old. My old valiant was 30 years old and the inside of the tank was like new compared to the EF's one! Last edited by twr7cx on Tue Nov 14, 2006 2:23 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

Only on s**t box sedans. Real cars, such as the wagons have tanks made out of real materials, such as steel!!! With that said right now I'm wishing it was plastic so it wouldn't be so rusty! Dam LPG drivers who drive around with low petrol in the tank! |

Plastic or metal tank they still fill up with rust from the corroded rusty old underground steel tanks the petrol companies have failed to replace after they corroded out because the sacrificial anode was not replaced as routine maintenance. Crap filled fuel from leaky old tanks. Its cheaper for the companies to put up with leak loss than replace underground tanks. They know which ones they are too.

Pitty we can't send the bastards the bill every time we need to change fuel filters & pumps due to the crap we pick up at the servo's where we get raped at the bowser for our fuel! I used a fuel tank cleaning and sealing product made by POR-15 in the steel tank in the Maverick.
It cleans it out great and recoats it and seals it to stop further rusting. It cost about $120 for the kit from memory. Very easy to use and so far seems to work well. http://www.por15.com/FUEL-TANK-REPAIR-K ... info/FTRK/ You can get it from a lot of automotive paint places too. I believe KBS coatings does a similar product. they are an australian company.
