A mate has a mild 351 in a XD ute with a single rail and 3.7 diff gears, and is looking for ways to make it a little more highway friendly. At the same time, he is considering going auto, but has no idea of what auto he wishes to put in it. Any suggestions of ways to make it a bit more rev friendly without losing the snappiness of the 3.7 gears?

Well without seeming to obvious, 5 speed conversion, or I'm pretty sure there is an overdrive that can be fitted to a C4, but not sure where to get one! It is a shame the BTR latemodel boxes aren't viable as they do drop revs quite nicely.

When I went to to the Koala Pk show a few yrs ago my mate in his 351C w/ 3.9's followed me up the freeway, not aware I sat on 110 (at about 2,200) while he was struggling behind me sitting on around 4,000 revs! But with the ZD (3.5's and 14" rims) it sat on 3,500 at 110 and I thought it was OK, but these days it seems too high.

Out of curiosity, why isnt a BTR a viable option?

I do believe someone made a stand alone unit but to got to the expense and drama (bellhousing is different etc etc) to end up with a box with s**t ratios and isnt all that strong until they are built just isnt worth the effort or financial outlay. An AOD fromt he states is a transmission that will bolt in where a C4 was but has the overdrive 4th gear. Not a cheap exercise but very much worthwhile.

Based on that fact my Mum is the best around! |

Thanks Matt - couldn't have said it better myself!

For any highway duties it would need to be a 4spd auto, or a 5spd manual, as you will need the overdrive gear to drop the revs down on the highway.
My torana used to cruise a bit over 3000 on the highway with a 3spd manual, with a 1:1 top gear, 3.36 diff gears & stock 13inch tyres. I dropped the rev's a fair bit when I fit some 14's with 205/70 R14 rubber on the back rims. Sitting on 8 inch wide rims, it was a nice big increase in rolling diameter, dropping my highway rev's a fair bit. I don't actually remember how much, because my tacho was broken by then, but you can use some tyre calculators out there on the internet to to work out what you currently have, and then punch in a larger rolling diameter tyre size to see what it will drop your rpm's by. Might be an idea, bigger rear rubber? Will give it an old school look with a slight rake forwards too. Cheers ToranaGuy

Actually, I've done a BTR conversion on a 351C with a carb years ago. Works well and you don't strictly need inputs from the EEC.
Certainly the best option though is an AODE/4R70W and a controller like the optishift from Baumann engineering. |
