I'm trying to wire up thermo fans and use the EL ECU to individually switch Fan 1 & 2 relays. However, when the ignition is on, I get 0.67v on Pin 53 (Fan 1). Is this what normally happens or should it be +12v?
I wasn't planning to replace the ECU as everything else works fine. In the EF/EL, does one of the thermo fans run continuously? When do the fans normally kick in? Till now, I've been turning on both together using a Davies Craig Thermatic switch. I was hoping to use one fan to vent the heat from the extractors as nearby wiring is starting to melt (and the floor's getting hot before the fans start up at the midpoint on the temp gauge). Any suggestions?

Pins 33 and 53 when energized are Neutral.
You run +12v to the relays with a diode (to prevent 12 getting back to the ecu) and the ECU earths the relays coil. Factory Relays have the diode built in. That's the best I can explain at this time of the night.

auto / manual it doesn't make a difference.
re-phrase: "Pins 33 and 53 when energized are Earthed." Far easier to rip a relay pack out of an EL and connect positive via an 60amp fuse, and trigger the relays with an aux power supply. and use the ecu to drive the fans in the dual speed.

I've actually got an already made unit ready for power and I've added a thermal breaker inside the item itself.
I'll pick it up from the folks and take a few pictures of it and post em up for others that might be interested.

From Krytox's information, I've worked out how to use the relay to trigger an earth rather than +12v.
Attached is a diagram for anyone who wants to use the twin fans but not the 3 EL relays. You can connect +12v from the ignition via a 30A fuse directly to each fan. With this method, you need 1 relay per fan if you want low & high speed operation. A motor mechanic told me that by using a switched earth you're less likely to blow fuses from the current surge.

Which fan is the primary (low speed) fan? The driver's side or passenger side?
I notice the second fan doesn't work until the line just under the red line (overheating). Is this the norm?
