I'm just starting out here, beginning to mod my car which I've had for about 6 months. I'm getting a number of bits for my 21st, including a new grille. This might sound stupid, but I can't manage to get the scrivets out from either side of the grille in order to remove it. They seem to be made of pretty cheap plastic - as soon as I attack it with any size of screwdriver (even one which fits), they just start to mush, and I physically cannot get the grille off without snapping its sides.
Am I missing something that's specific to these scrivets? Also, if I manage to get them off, can I just replace them with metal screws? I'd rather not go through this embarrassment again!

Matey, when you you try, get a flat bladed screwdriver under the actual screw part and then use the phillips screwdriver to unscrew it, or, get someone to hold the flat blade while you do it.
If I were you, I would go and buy a couple of new ones for when you put your NEW grille in, part number is V 840122 S $3.65 each from your local Ford dealer. |

Ok, thanks for the tip. Is it a stupid idea to just use generic screws instead? Apparently they seem to break nearly every time you remove them, from what I've read.

I guess it all depends on who is doing it, many people do put a lot of effort into it and press down too hard, I have removed them on my mates BA a few times and have never had the trouble.
Maybe whoever had it before you was a bit heavy handed |

mate, easier idea is to use the appropriate tool. you can get the remover from repco or such for about $15. basically you unscrew the scrivet as much as your able, and this tool slides underneath like a crowbar and you prise them out. since ive bought one its made future mods on the rest of the car ten times quicker. other options is to grind a groove in the centre of an old flatheaded screwdriver to do the same thing, or even get a kitchen fork and bend one of the tines out the way, and use that as a mini crowbar.

I ended up having to rip the rubber washers off with the screwdriver, then prize out the screws with pliers. Got some generic replacements from an auto shop, seem to work much better.
Thanks for your help. Also - can anyone tell me how to remove/replace headlights on a BA? I attempted to do so but what I was turning was obviously the adjustment bolt. Can anyone give me some advice on this, or direct me to the appropriate thread?

Oh you do have to remove the bumper? Thanks for the pic man!
How easy is it to remove the bumper? I realise I'm asking very stupid questions, but I'm completely new to any form of mechanics or mods.
