Hey all,
I am almost sold on getting lpg fitted to my standard i6 el ghia. But i am interested to know what kind of economy can be achieved with a well set up and tuned el? For instance if i were to fit some extractors and exhaust, CAI, head work and a different cam?? and get it tuned by someone who knew what they were doing for economy rather than power, is it possible to achive respectable figures? 80% of my driving is highway with cruise set, other 20 is non stop start 60kmph stuff but i still seem to average around 10-12lph. Or maybe im just dreaming lol |

Well I used to get 10L/100km for 35% metro and rest highway. I get 7L/100km pure highway...so single tank between Melbourne/Sydney run. Now I do 80% metro 20% highway (freeyway grid lock traffic) and get about 14L/100km. Modifications listed in my sig untuned...I would imagine I get better kilometers if the car wasn't running rich.
But I rarely drive the car now, only during bad weather. EDIT: forgot to add...if you plan on getting LPG conversion, make sure you work out the costs. Depending on how much the conversion costs and how long you keep the car, can you work out any kind of savings. For example. Say the conversion costs $2500, you save about $1/L running LPG, get a fuel economy of 13L/100km and drive 400km/week. That's roughly a saving of $52 a week. It will take 49 weeks for you to pay off the conversion using the money you saved and only then, will you really get savings from converting your car to LPG. So if you don't plan to keep your car for the next year, don't bother. Obviously I just guestimated everything here, you will most likely only save $0.85/L, but if you travel more in a week, you will pay it off much quicker. You may also see a drop in power...but not by much I don't think.

Thanks for th reply. Your fuel economy doesnt sound great, would be interesting to hear how much of a difference a good tune would make.
I think lpg might be the go, ill be getting vapour injection and is only costing me $900 out of pocket after the rebate. Shouldn't loose any power and i travel aprox 500km per week so it should pay for itself fairly quickly , a quick rough calculation shows i should save aroiund $40 per week taking 22 weeks to pay off the gas system. |

800km from a tank on a nice flat highway run wouldn't be uncommon in an EL sedan. 820km was my best in an EL Ghia.
Best I ever saw was a trip computer averaged 7.1l/100 on a return trip to Geelong. That was with a 1636 cam and hi-tech extractors, but otherwise completely stock. I think a 1636 cam is good for economy. Bit more low down torque in an auto can only benefit fuel economy if you don't abuse it. And when you say well tuned, you'd be wanting to be pedantic. Swapping coolant sensors, thermostats and oxy sensors every year. I did this every year or so, and always provided a benefit every time. Although 10 - 12 per 100 isn't too bad. Its the kind of figures guys are getting in brand new 6 speed FG's. Considering the EL is near 14 years old, 1700kg and alot less "advanced", I'd be happy. I average a 17 to 19/100 at the moment. I'd be on a constant boner if I could get a 10 on a weekly basis. |

according to my trip computer im averaging 25L/100k (something must be wrong with its caculations or something) but according to how much fuel i buy against how far i travel i average 11.98L/100K most of this is just a quick start while cold a quick trip over the other side of town stop for roughly 20 odds mins then go back home by the time im back home the car has just gotten to normal operating temperature but i do drive like a old grampa atm due to only have 1 point left on my license
