Before I start, has anyone ever heard of a TQ5 box??? Anyway, common question but never really found an answer that seemed realistic. How many horsepowers and torques will a T5 handle before it goes bang? Im guessing about 400 of each. Anyone out there know for sure?

As a side question, have any of you used an automatic without the torque converter?? Ive also heard of manual boxs with a torque converter and no clutch so you can flat shift...

your mates own Holdens yeh?

T5, good for about 300hp.
T5Z yeh, a little more perhaps.
TQ5 = 1970's mazda gearbox, bah really no such thing.

There has been a Torque Converter with Clutch setup, but None on a aussie built family falcon.
and why? there'd be no point.

Ok, the TQ5 story... Mates father had a Mazda rotary powered rally car, domestic club level, nothing special. It had a TQ5 with a torque converter, no clutch.
The Auto with no Torque Converter, another mate had a speedway car, ran a Hemi 6, direct driven to a C4 Ford box. Instead of the torque converter, it just had a bit of bar with the notches cut in the end to engage the oil pump in the front of the trans. Worked really well aparantly. I never got to see it going, was raced in the 80's from what I could gather. I got given the old car (Tube space frame, old shape Ford Capri fibreglass panels) but it was all shagged.

VW and Porshe had autos that had a dry plate clutch ( electric over vacuum actuated) and a torque converter. The gear stick was shifted like a manual....had a H pattern. Gears were L 1 2 & R.
The gear stick was 2 piece, the top part could slip up & down in the bottom of the stick...this had a microswitch.....so you could have your hand resting on the stick, in gear, rev the engine to 4,000rpm, and just take your hand off the stick...and instant wheel spin......this was available in a 1968 VW 1500 Beetle....first of the 12V ones.
It was an absolute ba5tard to remove the engine from one too.

Speedway guys have been using auto's (mainly powerglides) with no convertor for years, no clutch, direct drive with two forward speed. Only used on dirt. Stupid redneck, backwards, retarded sport anyway.

Way back, there used to be a conversion to run a clutch in a T400 auto. B&M I think made them, popular at the drags, no good for the street. You used the clutch to launch the car, the just flat shifted like an auto. Rare as rocking horse poo/hen's teeth/unicorn piss/honest politicians/neat VN's/etc now....

That is one unlucky t5.

If you are pulling skids they are okay. Traction + torque + 3rd gear = quick death though.

Also guys, 3rd gear, traction, plus heavy trailer loads don't make the T5 very happy either. Having said that, first gear to I guess you say go, as in can't get it without a dbl clutch & then it's a bit of hit and miss, is 4th in mine. Box whines like a supercar, fooled a young guy at work who thought it had a supercharger in the car lol.

There are ways to overcome the weak points in a T5 that would work for most of the 6cyl falcon brigade.

Cheers

ToranaGuy
