get a knive and gently wedge it under the front lip of the plastic shifter cover, pop it up, unscrew the shifter from the stick and lift the plastic cover up you can then take the light out and check it

In answer to your fuse question, it all runs off the instrument illumination fuse. If your other lights on the dash are fine it wont be the fuse. As posted before, you can remove the shifter surround and replace the globe. It's a T10 globe, same as your park lights, high mount brake light, footwell/rear courtesy light. Get them from any auto parts store, or.. if you have the likes of a Jaycar electronics store around, you can replace them with LEDs for about $2-$3 each. I did this with mine and it's well worth it. Just have to remember that the LED will only work one way, if you put it in and it doesn't light up, take it out, turn it 180 degrees and put it back in.
