i chucked the new cap on and took it for a spirited drive and , i can hear the hot coolant in the pipes, no overflow leakages that must of done it , will be changing coolant if i feel well enough ' thanks everyone who posted solutions

Well there ya go.
Good thing was only the cap. Do a coolant flush mate. Its easy as an oil change. |

Honestly if i put in a reco engine or a good 2nd hand engine i would of ripped out the radiator & took it to a radiator place to get it properly flushed & cleaned (you will be surprised how dirty they actually are).
Tectaloy flush is OK for a quick job but a proper job requires removal of the radiator & the header (plastic) tanks removed so all the gunk can get removed & cleaned. Run the Tectalloy radiator flush first though through the system & take the car for a minimum 1 hour drive (up to 2 hours if you think the cooling system is really dirty). Flush the system out let the hose/water run through the cooling system for at least another 30-60mins that way all the chemicals are removed totally. I usually do this whilst the engine is running. Once you have done that remove the radiator take it into a radiator place & ask them to clean/flush it out for you by removing the plastic tanks on the side of the radiator. They should charge you around 60 - 80 approx for a proper flush/clean. before you put the radiator back in & hook it all up, check all your hoses & wash/flush them too. Remove the overflow bottle & give that a good good flush with some water. Last (this is the hardest part) jack up the car & remove the heater hoses & stick the hose/water into the metal pipe & flush it out for a good 20mins & then do the other metal pipe as well (just above or below). So basically your flushing the inlet & then the outlet or vice versa of the heater core. This should pretty much give you a clean cooling system. Hook everything back up & then add some water (but don't fill it to the max) leave about 1 - 3 litres empty so then you can inspect for leaks. If no leaks are present then i would suggest adding the Tectalloy Gold (Green). If you feel daring you can add the tectalloy Gold before you put any water into the radiator however make sure you are 99.99% confident that most of the hoses & connections are water leak proof. If there are any leaks from here on you will be able to tell as the water will be green when it leaks. |
