i've recently put a set of 16 inch rims on my au1 fairmont and the tyre specs are 225/55 r 16s. I bought them off a mate who said there would be no dramas on having them on the car. But recently another friend has told me they're the wrong size and i shouldn't have them on as they will compromise handling and i've noticed it doesn't handle as well in the wet anymore(there is plenty of tread on the tyres). Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

225/50 R16 is the factory 16" size.

So, tyre width is fine. But sidewall is too large.

for factory AU1. AU 2/3 are different. I'll confirm the difference when I get back to the office, as my boss has an AU 3 Fairmont with factory 16's

On my AU1 the factory size was 215/55/16 from the placard. Fairly sure I have 225/50/16 currently on my car and my speedo reads higher than what it should.

Hi Au1Sam, I have the same issue with Tickford shark fins on my XH. The original tyres are 195x75x14 or 205x60x15 and the option for the 16inch wheel is 222x50 x16. By using the link below you just put in the size of tyre that you either have or are looking at and it will give you all of the necessary specs. You can also put in what is supposed to be on the vehicle and what you would like to have installed and it gives a comparison in relation to run out and even the difference in speed readings. I have found that the 225x50 x16 are too small and I have always thought that the engine was revving a bit too high at 110km/h on the motorway. I have since found out a better size to put on that will be comparable with the original tyres. Try it and see how you go.
