Do not use a torch to look into the tank!
It can cause an explosion too.

Yeah a good naked flame is what you need to look into the tank it spreads the light around better.

so you undid the inspection cover and looked at the lines going in and out of the tank? you check the whole fuel lines all the way to the motor?
it obviously has to be going somewhere. how does the car run?

Then it is somewhere along the fuel line. Jack the car up...make sure it won't drop on you...and then turn the ignition to ON and let the fuel line pressurize. Check both under the car and in the boot where the fuel pump access hole is to make sure there aren't any leaks. Also make sure the petrol cap is on properly. If that fails, check the tank for puncture. Most likely underneath. Get a damp cloth and wipe the tank clean and once dry, use tissue paper or news paper to wipe over exposed areas and see if there are wet spots from petrol...sniff the patch to make sure it isn't water and do it quickly cause petrol evaporates quickly. If that also passes the leaking test, then start the car up and see if your injectors have decided to leak and squirt petrol around...lets just hope the engine bay doesn't get caught on fire. If that fails, then I think you must ease off the accelerator. And another thing...make sure you're not smoking, no one smokes around you or a naked flame anywhere. I am sure that is self explanatory but not sure what people these days. phong =P~

I'm getting the same smell in the boot of my EL Fairmont. I've replaced all of the fuel lines, the o-ring on the pump/sender a**'y, and when i run more than 1/2 tank of fuel, it leaks into the boot under the metal plate... the smell gets that bad in the cabin you can't drive. Next step for me will be a new tank I think. If that doesn't solve the problem then I don't know what will....
