Hi,

I am about to do an EL Manual conversion to my fairmont. I have done conversions in the past but to an EB & ED. I would like to know a couple of things before I start.

Is there any pyhsical difference in parts from an EF to an EL? E.g. A manual gearbox out of an EF to a manual gearbox out of an EL (I have been told the flywheels are slightly different sizes? Is this true?)

And on my previous conversions removing the Auto gearbox and putting in a manual did not require me to hook the manual up in anyway to the computer. Is this also the case with EL's or is there something that needs to be controlled by the computer?

Any infomation or feedback on this issue would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks
Regards,
Mannix_119

The auto ECU will work fine, your thermo fans will be stuck on though and also your idle will be high. If you get a J3 chip and tune it with a manual map that should fix those problems

Adding a couple of resistors as per the various how-to guides around, fixes the high idle and constant fans.

fordmods-technical-documents-diy-f38/auto-to-manual-conversion-guide-t42420.html

The document in there is for an EF, but it is similar for the EL. Have a read through the thread, I am sure someone mentioned about placement of EL resistor.
